According to some sources, Aesop was born around 620 BCE in the Greek colony of Mesembria or in Phrygia. He was a slave of Xanthus and Iadmon in Samos , where he met the philosopher Solon. He was eventually freed by Iadmon and became an adviser to kings and city-states . He died in Delphi around 564 BCE, where he was executed on a false charge of temple theft .

Aesop is credited with a number of fables that feature anthropomorphic animals and teach moral lessons.
