Пороки сердца делятся на широкие группы; врожденные и приобретенные. Врожденные пороки сердца обусловлены структурными дефектами. Приобретенная болезнь сердца обусловлена главным образом ревматической лихорадкой.

Врожденные дефекты могут привести к цианозу, если дефект таков, что кровь не проходит через легкие для оксигенации. У пациента синеют губы, пальцы и ногти на ногах. Кончики пальцев рук и ног округляются и похожи на барабанные палочки. Иногда возникает отверстие между левой и правой стороной сердца или даже между аортой и легочной артерией.
