Ernest Rutherford was a New Zealand-born British physicist who made many important contributions to the fields of atomic and nuclear physics. He is best known for discovering the nuclear structure of the atom, the radioactive elements radon and protactinium, and the concept of radioactive half-life. He also predicted the existence of the neutron and calculated Avogadro's number. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 for his work on radioactivity.
