Exercise 3: Put the verbs into the correct tense (Simple Past or Past Progressive).

We were waiting for Jane when suddenly Louis came around the corner.

I was cycling through the park when I heard a strange noise.

He was passing her a message when the teacher did not look.

I fell asleep while I was watching TV last night.

When Mike and Jane were painting the walls, their dog knocked over the paint pot.

Tom broke his leg when he was playing frisbee.

The phone rang when I was sitting on the toilet.

In this exercise, we need to choose between the Simple Past tense and the Past Progressive tense. The Simple Past tense is used to describe actions or events that happened and ended in the past. The Past Progressive tense is used to describe actions that were ongoing or in progress in the past.

Let's go through each sentence:

1. We were waiting for Jane when suddenly Louis came around the corner. - In this sentence, "were waiting" is in the Past Progressive tense because the action of waiting was ongoing in the past. "Came" is in the Simple Past tense because it describes a completed action.

2. I was cycling through the park when I heard a strange noise. - "Was cycling" is in the Past Progressive tense because the action of cycling was ongoing in the past. "Heard" is in the Simple Past tense because it describes a completed action.

3. He was passing her a message when the teacher did not look. - "Was passing" is in the Past Progressive tense because the action of passing the message was ongoing in the past. "Did not look" is in the Simple Past tense because it describes a completed action.

4. I fell asleep while I was watching TV last night. - "Fell" is in the Simple Past tense because it describes a completed action. "Was watching" is in the Past Progressive tense because the action of watching TV was ongoing in the past.

5. When Mike and Jane were painting the walls, their dog knocked over the paint pot. - "Were painting" is in the Past Progressive tense because the action of painting the walls was ongoing in the past. "Knocked" is in the Simple Past tense because it describes a completed action.

6. Tom broke his leg when he was playing frisbee. - "Broke" is in the Simple Past tense because it describes a completed action. "Was playing" is in the Past Progressive tense because the action of playing frisbee was ongoing in the past.

7. The phone rang when I was sitting on the toilet. - "Rang" is in the Simple Past tense because it describes a completed action. "Was sitting" is in the Past Progressive tense because the action of sitting on the toilet was ongoing in the past.

These are the correct verb forms for each sentence.
