Old Jerome was very rich, but he did not have any children of his own. However, he adopted a boy named Gilbert, who lived close to Jerome's house. Old Jerome was fond of Gilbert. Additionally, he loved Barbara, who was his wife's niece and also lived in his house. Old Jerome believed that one day Barbara and Gilbert would get married.

One morning, Barbara received a letter from Gilbert, but she couldn't read it because she had never been taught to read or write. Her father never sent her to school. However, Barbara's quick mind prompted her on what to do. She thought that Barbara would be glad to take a ride, so she ran to the door and told the servant that they were going for a ride. Barbara had never ridden in an automobile before, but she believed that they would have a good time.

Meanwhile, Barbara was sitting in her room, holding a letter in her hand. She couldn't open it because it was not addressed to her. The letter was addressed to Nevada, who had gone to the theater before the letter arrived. When Nevada returned from the theater, Barbara gave her the letter. Gilbert gave Barbara a paper and said that there was an article about the part of the West where Nevada lived. He said it would be interesting to her. However, Nevada didn't even touch the paper. She got nervous about how to tell him that she had never gone to school.
