All was silent there and i could not find any trace of the unknown man. As i (walk) back i was overtaken by Dr Mortimer. He (return) from one of distant farms. In the evening i decided to go for a walk on the moor. I wanted to see the rock where the stranger had stood the night before. When i went out it was raining so i was glad i had put on my raincoat. All was silent there and i could not find any trace of the unknown man. As i was walking back i was overtaken by Dr Mortimer. He was returning  from one of distant farms. He told me that he was much troubled, for his little spaniel had disappeared on the moor. I remembered the pony on the Grimpen Mire and said nothing.

Был пасмурный и дождливый день. В доме было грустно из-за погоды. Все было мрачным вокруг, и я чувствовал, что произойдет что-то ужасное скоро. Вечером я решил прогуляться по торфяннику. Я хотел посмотреть на скалы, где незнакомец стоял прошлой  ночью. Когда я вышел на улицу, шел дождь, поэтому я был рад, что надел свой плащ. Было тихо , и я не мог найти никаких следов неизвестного человека. Когда я шел обратно, меня догнал доктор Мортимер. Он возвращался с одной из дальних ферм. Он сказал мне, что он был очень обеспокоен исчезновением своего маленького спаниеля  на торфяннике. Я вспомнил пони на болоте Гримпен и ничего не сказал.
