From the History of Sandwich
The Earl of Sandwich, who lived in England long ago, was known for his obsession with playing cards. He was so engrossed in his games that he didn't want to interrupt them for a meal. In order to solve this problem, he came up with a brilliant idea. He decided to place some meat between two slices of bread, creating what we now know as a sandwich. This way, he could hold his meal in one hand and continue playing cards with the other.
During the Victorian era, sandwiches became immensely popular in England, especially during the tradition of afternoon tea, which took place around 5 o'clock. Many affluent families would indulge in sandwiches during this time. Cucumber sandwiches, in particular, were highly sought after. The sandwiches were meticulously prepared, with the servants always cutting off the crusts to make them small and delicate.
Over time, sandwiches have evolved and become less elegant. Nowadays, they are often much bigger and less refined. One famous character known for his extravagant sandwiches is Dagwood Bumstead from the American comic strip. Dagwood sandwiches are notorious for their towering height and can consist of up to 10 slices of bread, each packed with different fillings piled on top of each other.
In modern-day England, sandwiches have become a staple part of daily meals. Millions of sandwiches are consumed every day, and they are commonly enjoyed as a quick and easy "snack" meal. If you don't feel like making sandwiches at home, there are numerous sandwich bars, cafes, and even restaurants that offer a wide variety of options for purchase.
The history of the sandwich is a testament to the ingenuity of the Earl of Sandwich, whose desire to continue playing cards while enjoying a meal led to the creation of a culinary delight that has stood the test of time.
