WHAT IS A DOMBRA?The dombra is a Kazakh stringed musical instrument played by plucking. It has a wooden frame and two strings.
Many traditional songs are played with dombra, which is closely linked to nomadic life. It evokes the first pages of Kazakhstan’s history and became a link stretching across generations.
As famous poet Kadir Mirzaliev said “real Kazakh is not Kazakh, real Kazakh is dombra!”. Kazakh people still respect and play this instrument. In any Kazakh home you will find at least one dombra player.
Dombra varies in length, neck, shape of corpus and amount of frets according to the region. In western Kazakhstan you will find long, thin neck, pear-shaped dombras with 13-14 frets. Dombra in Central Kazakhstan has a wide and short neck, a triangle form, with 6-8 frets.

3. Balalaika: Although the balalaika is not exclusive to the Cossacks, it is a popular instrument in their music. It is a triangular-shaped string instrument with three strings that is played by strumming or plucking.
4. Accordion: The accordion is another widely used instrument in Cossack music. It is a portable instrument with a set of keys and a bellows that produce sound when air is pushed or pulled through them.

6. Duda: The duda is a type of bagpipe that is popular in Cossack music. It consists of a bag made from animal skin, a chanter, and one or more drones. The player fills the bag with air and squeezes it to produce sound.
These are just a few examples of the musical instruments used in Cossack music. Each instrument has its own unique sound and role in creating the vibrant and energetic melodies that are characteristic of Cossack music.
