When I was 17 years old, I moved to my village and had a routine of walking the same way home from school every day. On this route, I would often see an old man sitting quietly under the shade of a tree. He always had a miserable look on his face, and the other children would often make fun of him. Despite this, I started to say hello to him when I passed by, and over time, we became good friends.
I would share with him my worries and anxieties about the exams I was taking at school, and he would tell me about his job as a conservationist. Through our conversations, I began to develop a deeper understanding and concern for the environment. It was all thanks to him that I started to think more carefully about the impact of our actions on the world around us.
However, one day, he wasn't there under the tree. And the next day, he was still absent. I grew worried and decided to visit his house to look for him. Unfortunately, I discovered that he had passed away the day before. It was a heartbreaking realization for me.
A few weeks later, as I was walking home from school, a young woman approached me and handed me a letter. It was from the old man's wife. In the letter, she expressed her gratitude for the conversations we had shared and revealed that the old man had felt cheerful whenever he spoke with me. He had decided that he wanted to give me a gift, and the letter explained that he had left me his special bracelet as a token of his appreciation.
Touched by this unexpected gesture, I started wearing the bracelet every day. It became a reminder of the friendship we had formed and the impact we had on each other's lives. Just as he had taken off the bracelet and given it to me, I now do the same whenever I meet someone who needs a little cheer in their life.
The old man will always hold a special place in my heart, and his friendship is something I will never forget.
