There he became known for the invention of the crossword puzzle in 1913. His puzzles were published in the newspaper and were very popular among readers. Then, in New York Wynne created the page of puzzles for the “Fun section” of the the New York World. For the end of 1913 a puzzle with a diamond shape was introduced. He called it a “WordCross Puzzle”. Wynne pioneered the use of blackandwhite grids to separate words in rows and columns. Nowadays there are lots of crosswords’ variants, but the principles of Wynne’s WordCross puzzles are still used for modern crosswords.
