Each country has its own traditions of cooking and national dishes. Russia is mainly a northern country with harsh winters, so food there is the source of energy and warmth. The essential components of Russian cuisine are bread and wheat products, vegetables, dairy produce, meat and fish. Russians usually have three meals a day: breakfast, dinner and supper. Breakfast is a quick meal, as the majority of people are in a hurry for work or school. It may contain a sandwich or two, an omelette, a cup of tea or coffee. Some people eat porridges or cornflakes in the morning. Dinner is a more sufficient meal. It is usually in the afternoon and may contain fresh salad, soup, main course and a glass of compote – stewed fruit drink. Typical Russian soups are shchi, solyanka, rassolnik, ukha. One of the people’s favourites in summer is okroshka – cold soup based on kvas or sour milk. Traditional Russian salads include Olivier and vinegret. Supper is served in the evening, when everybody comes home after work or studies. It is the second largest meal after dinner and it usually consists of the main course and dessert. Russians like meat and fish dishes, such as pelmeni, kotlety, shashlyk. Pelmeni are similar to dumplings with meat. Kotlety are like meatballs with spices. Shashlyk is a marinated meat grilled on a skewer. After nourishing dinner Russian people like to drink hot tea with jam or honey. Sometimes they cook blini or syrniki for the dessert. It is worth mentioning that Russians practice various techniques of preserving food, such as drying mushrooms and herbs, canning fruit and vegetables. Thus, in winter they can have a piece of summer goodies.

Title: Project on Russia's National Dish (Apart from Borscht)

Introduction: Russia is a country rich in history, culture, and culinary traditions. One of the most fascinating aspects of Russian cuisine is its national dishes, each of which represents a unique blend of flavors and ingredients. While borscht is often considered as Russia's national dish, there are other iconic dishes that also deserve recognition. In this project, we will explore one of Russia's national dishes, apart from borscht, and delve into its history, ingredients, and cultural significance.

Selection of Dish: For this project, we have chosen "Pelmeni" as Russia's national dish apart from borscht. Pelmeni are traditional Russian dumplings, typically filled with a savory mixture of minced meat, such as pork, beef, or lamb, and wrapped in thin, unleavened dough. These dumplings are then boiled and served with sour cream, butter, or vinegar for a delicious and hearty meal.

History and Origins: The origins of pelmeni can be traced back to the Finno-Ugric and Turkic peoples of Siberia, where they were traditionally prepared as a way to preserve meat during the harsh winter months. Over time, pelmeni spread throughout Russia and became a beloved staple of Russian cuisine. Today, pelmeni are enjoyed by people of all ages and are a popular dish during celebrations and family gatherings.

Ingredients and Preparation: The key ingredients for making pelmeni include flour, eggs, water, and a mixture of ground meats, along with seasonings such as salt, pepper, and sometimes garlic or onions. The dough is rolled out and cut into small circles, then filled with the meat mixture and folded into a distinctive shape. The dumplings are then boiled until they float to the surface, indicating that they are ready to be served.

Cultural Significance: Pelmeni hold a special place in Russian culture and are often associated with warmth, comfort, and togetherness. They are a symbol of hospitality and are frequently shared with friends and family. In addition, the process of making pelmeni is often a communal activity, bringing people together to prepare and enjoy this beloved dish.

Conclusion: In conclusion, pelmeni is a quintessential Russian dish that embodies the rich culinary heritage of the country. Its history, ingredients, and cultural significance make it a worthy representative of Russia's national cuisine. By exploring and celebrating dishes like pelmeni, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse and flavorful world of Russian gastronomy.
