The Devil Wears Prada Review

The Devil Wears Prada is a 2006 American comedy-drama movie directed by David Frankel and starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci and Simon Baker. The story takes place in modern New York and follows the main character named Andy Sachs, a fresh graduate from one of the best universities in the country, who came to New York to become a famous journalist. She struggles to find a job, and finally has to reluctantly accept a position of a personal assistant of Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. Because of her contempt and ridicule for the fashion industry, Andy gets into a lot of trouble at first, as she doesn’t take her job seriously. However, as time goes by, she starts putting a lot of time and effort into her work assignments and gets better and better at doing them, which seriously impresses her boss.

The film holds your attention from its very beginning to the end credits. It is colourful, dynamic, has a well-written plot, a great soundtrack, and the acting is very convincing. However, as much as I enjoy this film, I still cannot quite agree with its ending and the message the writers are trying to convey. At the end of the movie, Andy is confronted by her friends, who tell her that she has changed and become someone she has always ridiculed. She also feels guilty about not having enough time for her friends and family, so she decides to quit and find a different job. And this is where I totally disagree with what the movie is trying to tell us. In my opinion, changing our views under the influence of events that happen to us is a completely natural process that some people even call character development. Throughout our lives, we meet many different people and learn from them, and that is how we eventually can become better versions of ourselves. In the movie, the main character seemed to find a job she enjoyed, however, working there changed her as a person, so she could no longer agree with her friends on some topics. Instead of supporting her, they gave her an ultimatum to either quit her job or stop being friends with them, and that, from my point of view, was very selfish of them, so I very much disagree when the movie paints them as heroes of the story. Nevertheless, The Devil Wears Prada is still an iconic movie that never fails to leave a lasting impression, so I can definitely recommend watching it and coming to your own conclusions.
