Verbs in English can take on different forms based on tense, mood, voice, and other factors. The three primary forms of verbs in English are:

  1. Base Form (Infinitive):

    • This is the simplest form of a verb and is usually the form listed in dictionaries.
    • It is used in its basic, unaltered state and often follows "to" in infinitive phrases.
    • Example: to walk, to eat, to read.
  2. Past Tense (Simple Past):

    • This form is used to describe actions that have already happened in the past.
    • For regular verbs, the past tense is typically formed by adding "-ed" to the base form.
    • Example: walked (from "walk"), ate (from "eat"), read (pronounced "red," from "read").
  3. Past Participle:

    • The past participle is used in various verb tenses, including the past perfect, present perfect, and passive voice.
    • For regular verbs, it is often formed by adding "-ed" to the base form, similar to the past tense.
    • Example: walked (past participle of "walk"), eaten (past participle of "eat"), read (pronounced "red," past participle of "read").

It's important to note that irregular verbs do not follow the same pattern as regular verbs when forming the past tense and past participle. For example, "go" becomes "went" (past tense) and "gone" (past participle). Irregular verbs have their own unique forms for these tenses, and they must be memorized.

Keep in mind that English has many irregular verbs, so it's essential to familiarize yourself with their various forms through practice and study.
