The Mouse and the Country Mouse

The story was widespread in Classical times and there is an early Greek version by Babrius(Fable 108).[3] Horace included it as part of one of his satires (II.6), ending on this story in a poem comparing town living unfavorable to life in the country.[4] Marcus Aurelius alludes to it in his Meditations, Book 11.22; "Think of the country mouse and of the town mouse, and of the alarm and trepidation of the town mouse".[5]
However, it seems to have been the 12th century Anglo-Norman writer Walter of England who contributed most to the spread of the fable throughout medieval Europe. His Latin version[6] (or that of Odo of Cheriton) has been credited as the source of the fable that appeared in the Spanish Libro de Buen Amor of Juan Ruiz in the first half of the 14th century.[7] Walter was also the source for several manuscript collections of Aesop's fables in Italian[8] and equally of the popular Esopi fabulas by Accio Zucco da Sommacampagna [fr], the first printed collection of Aesop's fables in that language (Verona, 1479), in which the story of the town mouse and the country mouse appears as fable 12. This consists of two sonnets, the first of which tells the story and the second contains a moral reflection.

Once upon a time, in a quaint countryside, there lived two mice - a city mouse named Max and a country mouse named Ruby. Max was accustomed to the fast-paced, bustling life of the city, while Ruby cherished the peaceful simplicity of the countryside.
One day, Max decided to visit his cousin Ruby in the countryside. He wanted to show her the excitement and luxury of city life. As he arrived, he found Ruby happily nibbling on a wheat stalk, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
"Hello, Ruby! How can you possibly enjoy this mundane existence? Come with me to the city, where you can experience the finest foods and comforts beyond your imagination," Max enthusiastically suggested.
Ruby, though intrigued, hesitated. She replied, "Thank you, Max, for your invitation, but I feel content and safe here. The city may offer grandeur, but it also comes with its dangers and uncertainties."
Undeterred, Max insisted and finally convinced Ruby to join him for a visit. They made their way to the city and arrived at a luxurious mansion. Ruby was amazed by the lavish surroundings, but she couldn't help but feel uneasy.
As they settled in for the night, Ruby discovered that the city had its own set of problems. Loud noises from passing carriages and the constant fear of getting caught by the humans made her uneasy. In contrast, back in the countryside, the peaceful nights were filled with soothing sounds of crickets and the gentle rustling of leaves.
The next morning, they ventured to a fancy restaurant where Max indulged in a feast. However, as they were about to enjoy their meal, a cat's menacing presence frightened them away. In the countryside, there were no such fears, as Ruby knew the safest places to eat and rest.
Feeling increasingly uncomfortable, Ruby expressed her longing to return to her simple life. Max understood her concerns and reluctantly agreed to accompany her back to the countryside.
Upon their return, Ruby heaved a sigh of relief. She appreciated the tranquility and familiarity of her surroundings more than ever. Max, having experienced the contrasting lifestyles, now understood the true value of the countryside.
"You were right, Ruby. Life in the city may seem glamorous, but it comes at a cost. The peace and safety of the countryside are priceless," Max admitted.
From that day on, Max and Ruby cherished their differences and enjoyed occasional visits with each other, embracing the best of both worlds. They learned that happiness is not solely defined by material possessions but by the contentment one finds in their heart.
And so, the tale of the city mouse and the country mouse became a timeless reminder that one's true home and happiness are often found in the place where the heart feels the most at ease.
