Read the dialogue and answer the questions : FACING THE REAL WORLD – Have you already begun
developing your plans for the future? – It is very difficult to give a definite answer right now. But every time I am asked the question “What do you want to be?” I feel nervous. I usually never tell the truth and say “ I haven’t the slightest idea” and try to sound mysteriously. – But why? – That makes other people feel more nervous than me. – Have you ever turned to your parents for advice? – Oh. My mother is convinced that I should follow in the footsteps of my father and become a lawyer. My granny thinks that I should find a nice wealthy man to marry. And my father says “Just do what makes you happy”. My uncle encourages me by promising a job in his company. Being child I wanted to be like a cashier in the supermarket with long hair, blue eye shadows and long fingernail moving the cash. But my mother would say “You are not suitable for the job like that. You are too smart”. It is a very difficult to face the real world after being spooned with knowledge at school. And the question “What do you want to be?” never used to be threatening like now. What if I choose the wrong thing and feel regret a mistake in future? Of course like everyone I have some skills and interests and inclinations. But they seem to be undeveloped and may seem outstanding. I realize that I should plan out the rest of my life and explore my choice from every angle, but I have never thought more than six months ahead. There is one thing I know I wouldn’t like to be “a square in a round hole”. Questions for discussion: 1. What problems are involved in this interview? 2. Why is the girl afraid to enter the real world after being spoonfed with knowledge at school. 3. What does the real world mean for her? And for you? 4. Why does her mother say that she is too smart to be a cashier? 5. Does it mean that a man doing a less prestigious work is a loser? 6. The girl doesn’t want to be a square peg in a round hole. Do you know someone who is a square peg in a round hole? 7. What would you do if you were in the same situation? Give your piece of advice.

2) She is scared to choose the wrong thing. She doesn’t want to feel regret for her decision.
3) She feels like real world is too much for her. It’s difficult and confusing.
I’m also unsure of whom I want to be in the future. I’m scared to feel regret for picking the wrong job. Right now, for me it is too much responsibility. That is why you always have to think twice and never repeat the same mistakes.
4) Her mother says that she is too smart for being a cashier, because you don’t have to have a special knowledge to work in the supermarket. It is not a prestigious work for someone hardworking and clever.
5) No it doesn’t. Everybody is different. To achieve something big you have to take small steps, so that is why you should always respect people’s choice on choosing their job. Working as an ordinary cashier can be temporary.
6) No, I don’t. Everybody I know enjoy their work.
7) I wouldn’t hurry with my decision. I would think, analyse and do some research. Think about my interests and pick a job based on them. You just have to think wisely.

The problems involved in this interview are: a) Difficulty in giving a definite answer about future plans. b) Feeling nervous when asked about career aspirations. c) Feeling pressured by the expectations and opinions of family members. d) Fear of making the wrong career choice and regretting it in the future. e) Lack of long-term planning beyond six months.
The girl is afraid to enter the real world after being spoonfed with knowledge at school because she feels unprepared to make important life decisions. She may have been accustomed to a structured and guided environment in school, where she was provided with knowledge and direction. The real world represents uncertainty and the need to make independent choices, which can be intimidating and overwhelming.
The real world, for the girl, represents the transition from a sheltered and guided environment to a more independent and uncertain phase of life. It involves making important decisions about her future, choosing a career path, and taking responsibility for her own choices and actions. The real world may bring challenges, expectations, and potential regrets if the wrong choices are made. For others, the real world may have different meanings based on their individual experiences and perspectives.
The girl's mother says she is too smart to be a cashier because being a cashier is often seen as a job that requires less intellectual or educational qualifications. Her mother may have higher aspirations for her and believes that she should pursue a more prestigious or intellectually stimulating career path that aligns with her intelligence.
No, it does not mean that a man doing a less prestigious job is a loser. The mention of a man doing less prestigious work is not explicitly mentioned in the dialogue. It is important to recognize that the value of a person's work should not be solely determined by its prestige or societal perception. Every individual has unique skills, interests, and preferences, and it is important to respect and appreciate all types of work.
Being a "square peg in a round hole" refers to feeling mismatched or unsuited to a particular environment or role. It suggests that the girl does not want to end up in a career or life path that doesn't align with her skills, interests, or true self. It is possible to encounter people who feel like they don't fit into their chosen profession or societal expectations, and they may struggle to find fulfillment or satisfaction in their work.
If I were in the same situation, I would advise the girl to: a) Reflect on her own interests, passions, and values. b) Explore different career options and gather information about each one. c) Seek guidance from a career counselor or mentor who can provide objective advice. d) Consider pursuing further education or training in a field that aligns with her interests. e) Take the time to develop her skills and talents through internships, volunteering, or part-time jobs. f) Understand that it's okay to change career paths if the initial choice doesn't bring fulfillment. g) Trust herself and have confidence in her abilities to navigate the real world and make informed decisions.
