Who Developed the List of Hurricane Names?

The World Meteorological Organization develops a list of names that are assigned in alphabetical order to tropical storms as they are discovered in each hurricane season.

The lists of hurricane names are developed and maintained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There are separate lists for Atlantic hurricanes, Eastern North Pacific hurricanes, and several other regions across the world. The names are usually chosen based on suggestions from different countries in the respective regions. Each list contains an alphabetical list of names that are assigned to hurricanes in rotating fashion. When a hurricane occurs, the next name on the list for that region is given to the storm. If a hurricane is particularly deadly or costly, its name may be retired and replaced with a new one by the WMO to avoid confusion in the future.
