Here is a brief overview of Ukrainian schools in English:
- Ukraine has a five-level education system, which includes preschool, primary, secondary, upper secondary and postgraduate education. - School education is compulsory and lasts 12 years, starting from the age of 6. School education is divided into three levels: primary (grades 1-4), basic secondary (grades 5-9) and specialized secondary (grades 10-11 or 12). - Ukraine has different types of general education institutions, such as middle schools, grammar schools, lyceums, gymnasiums and boarding schools. Some schools may offer bilingual or multilingual education, or specialize in certain subjects or fields. - Education in Ukraine has been affected by the war with Russia, which started in 2014 and escalated in 2022. More than 3,790 schools and kindergartens have been damaged or destroyed by aerial attacks, artillery shelling, rocket strikes and looting. Many students have had to continue their studies in other schools, in shifts or remotely, which has reduced the quality of education. - Ukraine is trying to reform its education system to meet the needs of the 21st century. The New Ukrainian School reform, launched in 2018, aims to modernize the curriculum, improve the teaching and learning methods, and increase the autonomy and accountability of schools. The reform also seeks to promote the values of democracy, human rights and civic engagement among students.
