ДАЮ 70 БАЛОВ Write about the problems of Mellish school. текст:Mellish school is in the slums of

Brooklyn for pupils between twelve and fifteen years of age. There are about 1500 pupils there, and 90 teachers. It’s a problem school, perhaps one of the most difficult schools in America. The white teachers can’t walk to the school because they may be attacked. They all drive to school, and their cars have special locks. There’s always a black policeman at the door of the school. He has a radio contact with the school guards. Pupils must have a written permission from the teacher if they want to go to the toilet. There’s a guard outside the washroom. Only one child can go into the washroom at a time, and he can’t stay there long. The children who live in that district go to school that. They are all black children. However, why do the teachers work there? “It’s very hard of course,” Jane says Flinch, a forty – five-year-old teacher. Most children have problems at home. Some of them are beaten by their parents. Some of them sleep at the lessons because they had to work at night. Some of the children get sick at the lessons because they didn’t have breakfast or even a meal for a day or two. It’s the love of the job that keeps the teachers in that school. They teach and do social work. They feel that they are doing something good for the children who need help. “There’s also the problem of violence,” says one of the teachers. “Sometimes when I go into a class, I can feel that some of the children are like a dynamite. However, I feel quite safe. I am sure that other pupils will help me.” There is very little money for teaching in that school. There is no money to buy food for the children. The principal of the school has been there for many years. A lot of his happy optimism has gone. “No, i’m not optimistic about the future. Look around you,” he says and points out of the window at the high wall round the school. “It’s not a very bright sight: buildings have holes instead of the windows, shops are closed, groups of people are sitting on the steps of the houses. They have nowhere to go and nothing to do.” “We need money,” he says, “money is the only way to help this school and these people, and, of course, jobs for the people.”

Mellish School, located in the slums of Brooklyn, faces numerous problems that make it one of the most challenging schools in America. With approximately 1500 pupils aged between twelve and fifteen and 90 teachers, the school grapples with several pressing issues.

One significant problem is the prevalent threat of violence in the neighborhood. The white teachers face the risk of being attacked if they walk to the school, so they are forced to commute by car, equipped with special locks for security. Additionally, there is a black policeman stationed at the school entrance, maintaining radio contact with the school guards to ensure safety.

Within the school itself, there are strict regulations and measures in place due to safety concerns. Pupils require written permission from their teachers to use the toilet, and a guard is stationed outside the washroom to monitor the area. Only one child is allowed in the washroom at a time, and there are time restrictions to prevent loitering.

The students who attend Mellish School are predominantly black children from the surrounding district. Many of these children face challenging circumstances at home, adding to the complexity of their education. Some suffer from abuse at the hands of their parents, while others are exhausted from working night jobs, causing them to fall asleep during lessons. Some students even attend classes without having eaten breakfast or a proper meal for days.

Despite the difficulties, the teachers at Mellish School remain committed to their work. They understand the immense challenges their students face and view their role as not just educators but also social workers. These teachers believe that by providing education and support, they can make a positive difference in the lives of these children who desperately need assistance.

One teacher acknowledges the problem of violence within the school, but feels a sense of security knowing that other students will come to their aid when necessary. The tight-knit community formed within the school helps foster a supportive environment amidst the adversities faced.

However, financial constraints severely limit the school's ability to address these issues effectively. Mellish School lacks funding for crucial resources, such as providing meals for the children. The principal, who has been at the school for many years, has lost much of his optimism. The surrounding environment reflects the dire situation, with dilapidated buildings, closed shops, and groups of people with limited opportunities for growth and engagement.

The principal emphasizes the urgent need for financial support, stating that money is crucial for improving the school and the lives of the people in the community. Additionally, job opportunities are essential to uplift the neighborhood and provide stability and hope for its residents.

In conclusion, Mellish School faces numerous problems stemming from the challenging socio-economic conditions of the surrounding area. The school operates in an environment marred by violence, limited resources, and the struggles faced by its students. Despite these obstacles, the dedicated teachers persevere, driven by their passion for making a positive impact in the lives of the children who desperately need their help. However, the school urgently requires financial assistance and job opportunities to improve the situation for both the school and the community it serves.
