The climate of Belarus is continental, with cold winters and relatively warm summers. The continental climate of Belarus is felt more clearly the closer the region is to the center of the European continent and to the Eastern European plain. However, the country is subject to different air masses coming from Russia or the Arctic, the Atlantic region or the Mediterranean, so Belarus may experience sharp changes in air temperature and climate.

The amount of precipitation is about 700 millimeters per year, and this amount falls evenly throughout the year, although in the summer, precipitation falls slightly more - due to thunderstorms that pass in the daytime.

Winter in the country is cold, with the average air temperature usually below zero, even in the daytime. This temperature persists for several months. In the Western cities (Brest, Grodno) it is warmer, the average temperature in January is about -3°C, while in the Eastern regions it ranges from -4.5°C (in Minsk) to -7°C (the easternmost regions).

In the Eastern part of the country, snow lasts about a month longer (about four months) than in the Western part (three months).

The coldest periods are those when the Siberian anticyclone reaches the country. During these periods, the air temperature can drop to -30°C.
