He chose the army as a career and in 1915; during the First World War he led the Turkish army in Gelibolu and Istanbul. By the end of the war he was a hero and from that time all of the Turkish people supported him. He led the Turkish army in the War of Independence (1919- 1922) and in 1923 he became the first president of the new republic of Turkey.
