5. "It took me a while to get used to using chopsticks, but now I prefer them to a fork and knife." This means that initially the speaker had difficulty using chopsticks, but after practicing they became more comfortable with them and now they even prefer them over traditional utensils.

6. "He used to be a heavy smoker, but he quit a few years ago." This means that in the past, the person smoked a lot, but they quit smoking a few years ago.
