What is periderm?

Periderm is a protective tissue that develops in plants as a response to external factors such as injury, infection, or environmental stress. It is a secondary tissue that replaces the epidermis in older parts of the plant, providing additional protection and support. The periderm consists of three main layers: the cork cambium, cork cells, and phelloderm.

The cork cambium is a meristematic tissue that produces new cells. These cells differentiate into cork cells, which form the outermost layer of the periderm. Cork cells are dead at maturity and have a thick, waterproof cell wall called suberin. This suberin layer helps prevent water loss and protects the plant from pathogens and physical damage.

The phelloderm is the innermost layer of the periderm and is composed of living parenchyma cells. These cells are responsible for producing new cells in the cork cambium.

Periderm is commonly found in woody plants, such as trees and shrubs, where it replaces the epidermis as the plant grows older. It forms the outer bark of the plant and helps protect the underlying tissues from mechanical damage, pathogens, and extreme weather conditions.
