Autotrophic Nutrition in Plants
Most plants obtain their nutrients through autotrophic nutrition, which is the ability to produce their own food from inorganic substances like carbon dioxide and water using sunlight, chlorophyll, and photosynthesis. However, not all plants are strictly autotrophs.
Some plants exhibit mixotrophic nutrition, obtaining nutrients through both autotrophic and heterotrophic means. Examples include certain species of liverworts (Bryophyta) that can photosynthesize but also absorb partially decomposed organic matter from their environment.
A small number of plant species are holoparasites, obtaining all of their nutrients heterotrophically through parasitism on other plants. Examples include various mistletoes, broomrapes, and dodder plants. Holoparasitic plants lack chlorophyll and are unable to photosynthesize. They obtain water and nutrients from their host plant through specialized structures called haustoria
In summary, while the vast majority of plants use autotrophic nutrition, a small minority are mixotrophs or holoparasites that supplement or rely entirely on heterotrophic means of nutrition.
