Cell Division
Cell division is the process by which cells reproduce and create new cells. There are two main types of cell division: mitosis and meiosis.
Mitosis is the process by which somatic cells divide to produce two identical daughter cells. It is involved in growth, repair, and asexual reproduction in organisms. Mitosis consists of several stages, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase, the chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane breaks down. In metaphase, the chromosomes line up at the center of the cell. In anaphase, the sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of the cell. Finally, in telophase, the nuclear membrane reforms, and the cell divides into two daughter cells through cytokinesis.
Meiosis is a specialized form of cell division that occurs in reproductive cells (gametes) to produce haploid cells with half the number of chromosomes. Meiosis consists of two rounds of division, known as meiosis I and meiosis II. Meiosis I involves the separation of homologous chromosomes, while meiosis II separates sister chromatids. The end result is the production of four genetically unique haploid cells.
