It is synthesized from a DNA template through a process called transcription. RNA is single-stranded and contains ribose sugar instead of deoxyribose. It also has uracil (U) as a nitrogenous base instead of thymine (T).
There are several types of RNA, including messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). Each type of RNA has a specific function in protein synthesis. mRNA carries the genetic information from DNA to the ribosomes, where it is used as a template for protein synthesis. tRNA helps in the translation of mRNA into a specific sequence of amino acids during protein synthesis. rRNA is a structural component of ribosomes, which are responsible for protein synthesis.
In addition to their role in protein synthesis, RNA molecules also play a role in gene regulation. They can interact with DNA and proteins to control the expression of genes, determining which genes are turned on or off in a particular cell or tissue.
