Chlorella's Diet
The diet of Chlorella consists primarily of carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, and minerals. As a single-celled green algae, Chlorella uses photosynthesis like other plants to convert these elements into energy and to grow and reproduce.
During photosynthesis, Chlorella absorbs carbon dioxide from the air or water around it. It also takes in water, which provides hydrogen used in energy production. Sunlight provides the energy needed for the photosynthetic reaction to occur.
In addition to carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight, Chlorella requires certain minerals to thrive. These include nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, and small amounts of other trace minerals. It obtains these minerals from the water in which it grows. Chlorella has a cell wall that contains cellulose, which helps it retain the absorbed minerals.
If any of these key components of its diet - carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, or minerals - are lacking, the growth and reproduction of Chlorella will be limited or halted. It has evolved to efficiently use the simple elements in its environment to fuel its life processes through photosynthesis.
