Breathing and Muscles

Breathing is the process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. It is facilitated by the contraction and relaxation of muscles involved in respiration.

The muscle that plays a major role in breathing is the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. When it contracts, it flattens and moves downward, causing the chest cavity to expand and air to be drawn into the lungs. When it relaxes, it moves upward, reducing the volume of the chest cavity and causing air to be expelled from the lungs.

While the diaphragm is the primary muscle involved in breathing, other muscles, such as the intercostal muscles between the ribs and the abdominal muscles, also contribute to the process by aiding in the expansion and contraction of the chest cavity.
