The chest cavity is protected by the rib cage. The rib cage consists of 12 pairs of ribs that curve around the chest and connect to the sternum in front and the vertebral column in back. This rib cage structure provides protection for the organs inside the chest.

It contains the lungs, heart, and major blood vessels. Located inside the chest cavity are the two lungs, which are responsible for respiration. The heart is located behind the sternum and pumps blood throughout the body. Several major blood vessels, including the aorta and vena cava, also pass through the chest cavity.

The diaphragm plays an important role. Situated below the lungs is the dome-shaped diaphragm muscle. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, increasing the volume of the chest cavity. This causes the lungs to expand and draw in air. During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and the elastic lungs contract passively.

It facilitates breathing and circulation.
