Types of Pollination
There are two main types of pollination: self-pollination and cross-pollination.
Self-Pollination: Self-pollination occurs when the pollen from the anther of a flower is transferred to the stigma of the same flower or another flower on the same plant. This type of pollination can occur in plants that have both male and female reproductive organs in the same flower or in flowers that have both male and female parts but are not self-fertile. Self-pollination can lead to a lack of genetic diversity within a population.
Cross-Pollination: Cross-pollination occurs when the pollen from the anther of one flower is transferred to the stigma of another flower on a different plant of the same species. This type of pollination promotes genetic diversity within a population and is essential for the reproduction of many plant species.
